As a professionak welder of 20+ years and a knife collector for longer I can honestly say for normal knives this can work fine. As long as the metal does not turn color it hasnt gotten hot enough to ruin the temper of the blade. I have used bench grinders, hand grinders and belt sanders to repair friends chipped rough edges without hurting blade temper.
